The next meeting of the History of Science reading group will be on

Tuesday, 22 October 2019, 5.30pm

Alice Farrands room, 22 Gordon Square

(that is, the PhD room in the STS Department)

The paper we will read is

Small clear plastic vial with wite stopper, containing several small flies with the bottom third of the vial filled with yeast-agar food, labelled with sticky tape and felt tip pen
Drosophila melanogaster flies in a vial. Photograph by Jenny Bangham, taken from the paper, published CC-BY.

Living collections: Care and curation at Drosophila stock centres by Jenny Bangham, taken from a forthcoming issue of BJHS Themes, available online ahead of press, and open access: https://doi.org/10.1017/bjt.2019.14

This is taken from a theme issue about the role of collections in the history of science. Jenny's paper explores the changing role and status of collections of fruit flies that are used for research, considering the animals, those who look after them, and the institutions involved.

The Alice Farrands room is on the ground floor, accessible from Gordon Square by six steps.

Please let me know if you have any access requirements. Knock on the door at 22 Gordon Square if you do not have access with the UCL swipecard.

The History of Science reading group will then next meet on Tuesday 19 November, at 5.30pm. I have in mind a paper to read but please do let me know if you have any suggestions for this or future reading groups.

We alternate the Tuesday evening slot with two reading groups on Philosophy of Science and Technology (next meeting 29 October 2019), and Science and Belief (next meeting 12 November 2019). The STS departmental website lists all the reading groups run by students in the department.
